White Cane Awareness Community Walk Celebrate independence, accessibility, and community with Blind Fitness! Every October, Blind Fitness celebrates White Cane Awareness Day, recognizing the power, purpose, and independence represented by the white cane. Join us on Saturday, October 17 from 9:30 AM–12:00 PM for our annual White Cane Awareness Community Walk through Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone. For people who are blind or have low vision, the white cane is more than a mobility tool - it is a symbol of freedom, independence, and safety. White Cane Awareness Day provides an opportunity to celebrate its role in independent travel while helping build greater public understanding of white cane use and accessibility. Together, blind and low vision participants, volunteers, family, friends, and community members will take our message into the community with a walk through the vibrant Funk Zone. Along the way, we’ll increase visibility, raise awareness, and celebrate a community where people of all abilities can move through the world with greater independence and confidence. We’re thrilled to collaborate with Access Central Coast, Braille Institute, and UCSB Delta Gamma, with special support from Jeannine’s Bakery by the Beach, for this year’s White Cane Awareness Community Walk! EVENT DETAILS
Saturday, October 17 | 9:30 AM–12:00 PM Meeting Location: Skaters Point Park | 100 E. Cabrillo Blvd., Santa Barbara Grassy lawn next to Skater’s Point, near Anacapa & Cabrillo Blvd. Look for the Blind Fitness sign! The morning will begin with a welcome circle and brief history of White Cane Awareness Day, followed by human guide orientation and training led with support from our Orientation & Mobility professionals. We’ll then head out for our community accessibility walk through the Funk Zone, exploring features that support—or sometimes create barriers to - independent travel for people who are blind or have low vision. Whether you are blind or have low vision, a family member, friend, volunteer, community partner, or someone who simply wants to learn more about accessibility and show your support, we invite you to walk with us. Please RSVP by October 15.
