A reflection on movement, inclusion, and belonging.
By Tania Isaac-Dutton | Executive Director, Blind Fitness Movement is one of the most natural expressions of being human. It allows us to explore, connect, grow, and experience the world around us. Yet for many individuals who are blind or have low vision, opportunities for movement are often limited - not because of ability, but because of barriers. Sometimes those barriers are physical. More often, they are assumptions. Barriers exist everywhere. There may be an intersection without an audible pedestrian signal, overgrown landscaping that extends into a sidewalk, or a crowded community event where navigating safely becomes challenging. For many people who are blind or have low vision, movement begins long before they leave home. Planning a route often requires time, energy, and careful consideration of details that many of us rarely think about. At Blind Fitness, we don't believe movement is something that has to be earned. We believe movement belongs to everyone. Movement can be a walk along the beach. A gentle stretch. Strength training. Catching a wave. Dancing. Laughing during improv. Taking a friend’s hand. Movement becomes connection. Movement is not about performance. It is about participation. Accessibility is about more than removing barriers. It's about creating spaces where people feel welcomed, included, and free to move through life together. At Blind Fitness, we believe that when everyone has the opportunity to move, everyone has the opportunity to belong.
